Jr Music Exec Connection: Jr Music Executive Intern 2006

Saul Montgomery, aka SAUL GOOD, was born and raised in the Queen Lane projects in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. Growing up, he listened to LL Cool J and admired LL’s ability to have longevity in an occupation that is notoriously short for any artist who does not maintain the ability to stay connected to the audience. The fact that LL could establish himself as a pillar in hip hop provided inspiration for Saul to embark on this journey. Growing up in Queen Lane Projcts, Saul witness the habits of living in a hazardous enviroement. Drugs and murder were not situations that was out of the normal for him. Anybody that ventured into this part of the city would quickly find out why it is label the “Brickyard”. Saul’s only escape from there was to put his thoughst into poetry. He finally got an opportunity to leave the projects and move in with his dad. Living with his dad made him appreciate the lyrical skills of founding rappers like Rakim, KRS One, and Slick Rick. As his music taste started to expand, so did his ability to write poetry. He discovered this talent at the early age of 10. Soon afterward. he started singing and dancing and performing in front of his family. At the age of 14 he began to structure his broken poems into complete songs. At a family get together, he recited one of those songs to Kerwyn John, a cousin of his, who was so impressed with his calculated rhymes and commanding delivery, he set up a meeting with Stanley Robinson, Jr. (pka Rob Infinite) and Donald Yorkman: who along with Kerwyn John are co-founders of Local Five-8 Entertainment, LLC., an independent label/production company located in Philadelphia. After hearing Saul rap, they signed him on the spot. Although breaking a new artist without a major push behind them is almost impossible, Saul’s commitment and passion for his music made the vision much easier to strive for. After long hours of recording and countless minutes of stage preparations, he finally got an opportunity to showcase his talent. Since his first show he has been on many stages and performed at numerous venues. As his buzz grew, the industry started to take notice. Saul was invited to perform on BET’s 106 and Park. After an incredible performance his myspace friends request could not stop overflowing. Saul has been able to do some film work. In the fall of 2006 Saul was able to secure a part in “American Gangster”, starring Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, T.I. and Common. In the fall of 2005, Saul landed a part in “Off the Black”, a movie starring Nick Nolte, Trevor Morgan and Noah Fleiss. That same year, he also had the opportunity to do some modeling and even though he did an incredible job for a newcomer, his heart is in his music. Saul Good released his first mixed tape in January of 2006 aptly named “Class of ‘06 the mixtape” to great reveiws. His song P-H-I-L-L-Y was featured on Power 99 fm as the “Home Town Jam”.

Music: Experimental Hip Hop
Jr Music Exec Connection: Jr Music Executive Intern 2008

Hip-hop. Experimental. SOULful Music. What do you get when you put all of this into a blender and crank it up? You get something quite different, of course. You get Philadelphia’s own, Khemist. Viewed as what others may see as a child Khemist has the passion for music of an old soul. Khemist’s only motive is none other than putting out good music, while helping those who listen have a better understanding of the art behind it. Philadelphia is greatly known for the amount of talent it oozes from its four corners on the map. Boys to Men, Jill Scott, The Roots, Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff are just to name a few. While Philadelphia is currently known for its violent and sickening crime rate, there is still light shining in this darkness. Khemist hopes to be the beacon for this light, acknowledging the fact that there are other options for success, rather than a gun and a mask. Khemist doesn’t want to be known as another great rapper. Inspired heavily by the other greats to have come from his city, Khemist would rather be recognized as one of the most influential musical artists to have ever blessed the microphone. If one was to compare Khemist to another artist, you would probably hear his lyrical style being paralleled to the likes of Lauryn Hill and Lupe Fiasco, while his creativity and mind is in a class of its own due to his individuality. Calling himself a “weirdo”, it is definitely noticed yet appreciated in his music. Take a listen. He’s in the lab and he’s ready. He’s Khemist.

Speaking to our times’ hopes and possibilities with evolutionary artistry and Emceeing, one way to describe his music is exceptional. A profoundly lyrical, poetic and in-depth yet conversational artist is how you will get to know Aquil through his rhymes. Aquil shows his dedication and appreciation of Hip Hop music and music in general with authenticity, honesty and lyrically fluid delivery. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pa., Aquil is a lifelong admirer of music and has honed his skills, unafraid to mix genres such as the Blues, Jazz, Afro Beat, and Funk into a Hip Hop interpretation. His live shows are remarkable, leaving the crowd captivated, inspired and shouting for more.

Recording his up and coming album, tentatively titled “Traveling Light”, Aquil is in the process of gaining digital distribution and releasing his work independently. Talented producers Aashir Nuri, Y?Arcka and Writtenhouse’s producers Kush Shalimar and Chris Conway are collaborative forces on this project, which will give people a vibe that is reminiscent of classic Hip Hop, as well as a sound unheard before. Scheduled for a release in 2010, internet radio stations, blogs, and websites have expressed their excitement in promoting this album. Aquil is scheduled to go on an East Coast tour along with a College Tour to promote the album.

Releasing one mixtape, Blues People (September 2008), which sonically sounded more like an album, Aquil set the mark very high; exuding purpose and style while maintaining substance. As a graduate of Temple University, Aquil chose music over graduate studies because he wants to help return the feeling of inspiration, hope and creativity to music. Many have alluded to similarities in his style with Rakim, Nas, Tupac, Black Thought, KRS-ONE, Common, Mos Def, and Talib Kweli. With lines that are unapologetic, such as “I entered into a drought of musical doubts but open my mouth and eloquent notes just flow out” and “This platform for the stories that’s untold I’m like Dubois with a flow kick the Souls of Black Folk”, Aquil gets his points across with passion and technical grace. He gives you his thoughts and feelings along with a historical analysis and social-political commentary.

Aquil has performed at the following venues and universities, The Sputnik, The Trocadero, The Clef Club, World Café Live, Syracuse University and Temple University, and has also performed in several other cities including New York City, Camden NJ, Baltimore MD, Washington D.C. and Miami FL. With the support of organizations such as Jr. Music Executive and The Enterprise Center’s Russell Hicks, who has described Aquil as “seriously contending for the title of next greatest Emcee”, Aquil has the tools necessary to leave an impact on music forever.

Jr Music Exec Connection: Jr Music Executive Intern 2006, Jr Music Executive Board Member, Biz Exclusives Writer

If this is your first time hearing the name of this Philadelphia producer, consider this an advance notice. With a variety of upcoming projects scheduled for release in 2010, the Soulful Hip Hop producer is sure to make an impression with what seems to be a promising career. Aashir Nuri began to experiment with the art of beating making while a student at the University of Pittsburgh. He began to gradually develop his craft while balancing music with the everyday struggles of being a broke college student. Aashir Nuri would go on to spend the next few years shopping his beat CDs to artists, A&Rs, and record labels in the music industry. Although, he came very close to getting placements with major label artists, the conversations with the artists and their management fell through. That’s when Aashir realized that shopping his beat CDs around was not the best approach to establishing himself as a producer.

Aashir Nuri changed his approach to an organic one and began to work on projects with local artists, the first being his brother, Long Live. At the top of 2008, Aashir linked up with a Philadelphia Emcee by the name of Aquil. The two met while attending Temple University. Later, Aashir and Aquil would both map out a plan to release Aquil’s first CD. Since connecting with Aquil, Aashir has gone on to do projects and songs with other Philadelphia Artists such as Weldon Merrial, Prosser, and Charlie K. (of the group Writtenhouse). Using his writing skills as a means for exposure, Aashir became a freelance journalist and had the pleasure of interviewing prominent Hip Hop artists and legendary musicians such as Beanie Sigel, Denaun Porter, Black Ice, DJ Z-Trip, Monie Love, Gamble and Huff, and Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek (Reflection Eternal).

Aashir’s belief in himself and his musical talents led him to make one of the toughest decisions of his life. In March of 2008, he quit his job of working for the City of Philadelphia and never looked back. Aashir recalls that “the decision to quit was not an easy one. You’re talking about a total sacrifice of stable income in exchange for unstable dreams”. That decision seems to be paying off, however. With the free time gained, Aashir was able to continue to develop his craft as a producer and take music more seriously. In addition to focusing on music, Aashir exploited his journalism and computer programming skills to create this entire website.
